Parish Registration.  If you attend St. Mary’s regularly, we ask that you formally register with us—as is customary in Catholic parishes in the U.S.  By registering, you help the pastor and staff to better communicate with you and to better plan to serve your spiritual needs.  You need to be registered in order to obtain a certificate of sponsorship if you are asked to be a child’s godparent or confirmation sponsor.  You also need to be registered in order to obtain reduced parishioner rates for weddings in our church, tuition in our school, and sites in our cemetery.  Registration forms are available in the gathering area of the Church, at our online site and at the parish office.  (If you move away to another parish, please notify us of this as well.)  We also would appreciate a digital photograph of your family for our database.  You can either come by the parish office during office hours or e-mail a picture to us.  Thank you!

Papal Honorees Establish New Association

Archbishop Donald Wuerl has approved the creation of an association of Papal Honorees in the Archdiocese of Washington.  The association will include men and women who have received the Pontifical Equestrian Order of Pius IX, the Pontifical Equestrian Order of Saint Gregory the Great, the Pontifical Equestrian Order of Pope Saint Sylvester, the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Cross Benemerenti.

The initial goal of the association is to ensure that we connect with all Papal Honorees in a confraternal fashion and celebrate the Eucharist together.  Our sincere hope is that Papal Honorees might find encouragement and support from one another as we seek to continue to support the people of our Archdiocese.  If you are a recipient of a Papal Honor and did not receive a letter about the new association, please contact Mr. Jeffrey Ludwig at (301) 918-2923 or via e-mail at jludwig@naimichael.com.

Photography Guidelines for Churches

Periodically, the Office of Communications receives inquiries from parishes about photography in church, particularly during Mass or weddings. Below are simple guidelines used by the archdiocese for photographers at major events. These are being provided to assist parishes in developing their own guidelines as they balance the desire for documentation of liturgies with reverence for the liturgy.

  1. Overall rule of thumb: photographers should be respectful of the parishioners and not block their views nor interfere with the liturgy.
  2. Photographer do’s: shoot from the side or rear of the church. If a particular moment calls for a photo from the front, stay low (e.g., kneel) and out of the center aisle to avoid blocking the view of parishioners and becoming the center of attention.
  3. Photographer don’ts: walk across the front of the church; stand in the front blocking pews (especially with a tripod); shoot from the center aisle (except from the back of the church) or from within the sanctuary; or set up a tripod in the center aisle, in pews, in front of pews where they will block the view of parishioners or in side aisles during the distribution of the Eucharist, processional or recessional.
  4. The low lighting in many of our churches means flash often is necessary, but it should be used judiciously.
    New Catholic Radio Station
With great thanks and praise to almighty God as we want to announce that the nation`s capitol will soon be the home of another Guadalupe Radio Network station. This spring WMET 1160 AM begun broadcasting Catholic Radio 24 hours a day. And what an amazing impact this station will have in bringing souls closer to our Lord and the holy Saints, an impact that has the potential to reach far beyond the immediate listening area.

Mission Statement

"Endowed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the members of St. Mary`s dedicate ourselves in a spirit of mutual respect to live and proclaim the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. We are called to do this by reaching into our parish family, and reaching out to the universal Church, by our constant ministering to their spiritual, educational, social, and material needs. Our parish endeavors to use all that God has given us for His glory - be that our time, talent, or treasure - in an environment of collaborative ministry, in full harmony with the teachings and traditions of our Catholic faith. The members of our community act as faithful followers of Jesus and recognize from Whom the gifts come and will joyfully give back to God what He has asked of us, under the constant care and protection of Mary, our Blessed Mother."
