Mission Statement

We realize that our mission is to share the work of Jesus This sharing means that we must achieve a close relationship with God and with each other. When He needs someone to reach out, we must be His hands. When He needs someone to walk for Him, we must be His feet. Hospitality and service to each other must be our watchwords. Another way that we can note the Presence of the Lord is by studying the nature of the church building. The walls are glass. The roof seems to float over the structure - the building itself makes you take notice. As you pass by, you cannot help but to look inside and wonder what is happening inside the building. It makes you want to stop and come in and look. When you enter you see all of the seats arranged around a table. Something important must be going on at this table and it is. God is here..... The cupola, which is on the roof of the building, draws your attention. It shines like a light over the town of Gurnee - drawing blessings down upon all of its inhabitants. It is a beacon which says “Come in. You are welcome here.” It is as if we, here at St. Paul’s, are lighting a fire on top of a hill - as many of our ancestors did when they came to worship. The glass walls also allow us to look out. They allow us to focus on what is happening in this messy world of ours. People need help. We have no choice. We must help them. It is what our God is telling us to do. It is not enough for each of us to come to church every Sunday and not let the Jesus, who resides in each one of us, take flight. That is why seeing each other in the worship space is so important. The worship space is designed for community prayer. Knowing and loving are the most important of our functions. We must reach out - both inside and outside the church community - and make a difference. Jesus loves each one of us and we must love each other in return. This is why a simply designed worship space makes so much sense. It mirrors the simple and loving life that Jesus lived for each one of us.
