Lazarus Ministry
Lazarus Ministers bring to the bereaved the compassion and concerns of a loving God.
Lazarus Ministers have been a part of the Catholic Church for as long as there have been funerals. For many hyears in our parish, the church was prpared by just a few.
In the Fall of 2004, the ministry was expanded to involve more of the community. In addition to filling all the usual ministries necessary for Mass, we also serve in roles that were once filled only by priests and deacons. The blending of our different voices and
perspectivesat the funeral home during the Vigil (or Wake), at the Transfer prayers said the morning of the funeral, at the cemetery during the Committal Rite, and of course during Mass, provide a loving embrace of support for our bereaved.
In preparation for the annual
Mass of Remembrance, offered on the first Saturday in November, we write and send personal invitations to the families whom we've honored with Christian Burial in the previous year, After the Mass, we host a reception for those families and invite everyone at this Mass to share this moving experience. Our intent is to welcome, and offer our concern, prayers and comfort to the bereaved on this special day of remembrance.
Grief leaves a very deep wound and it is our prayer that through this ministry, we will share with others in their hour of grief. We all feel honored to be called to such a tender ministry and warmly welcome anyone who also hears the call.
