The Catholic Community of St Mary’s Cathedral Basilica is dedicated to the principles that led our first Bishop, John Mary Odin C. M., to Texas - to care for the Catholics of Texas, to minister to them and to take care of both their spiritual and physical needs. Today we help with love and compassion all those who come to us with their special needs, to care for them as a mother would for her children. We are called to minister to those who come to Galveston from other parts of Texas, the nation and the world. It is also our mission to maintain this holy edifice in memory of those dedicated Bishops, priests and religious who came before us. A sacred trust is owed the people of Belgium, who, in memory of Father J. M. Paquin C. M., gave the materials so that St. Mary’s Cathedral could be built. We also owe that same sacred trust to future generations of Catholics so that they might see what love of neighbor and love and dedication to God can accomplish.
