...to Our Lady of Lourdes - a wonderfully, diversified parish! We are considered the "Mother Church" of this region, because of our original boundaries which included English speaking Catholics in the area bounded by Devon Avenue to the north, Belmont Avenue to the south, Lake Michigan to the east, and the Chicago River to the west - an area which now encompasses ten parishes.
In 1916, the Spanish Renaissance-style church with its distinctive red-tiled domes replaced the original frame church.
We became "famous" for a unique event that happened back in 1929. The entire church was moved from the east side of Ashland Avenue to the west side. The church was cut in half and then a thirty-foot extension was inserted. This was occasioned by the widening of Ashland Avenue, and the need for increasing the capacity of the church. Simultaneously, the pastor, Father James Scanlon, was finding that the church`s seating capacity had become inadequate to keep pace with the burgeoning community.
Though it was, and is, considered an architectural wonder, we would rather think that we are well-known for our on going service to the Ravenswood-Uptown area.
Now one hundred and sixteen years old, Our Lady of Lourdes Church was established in 1892. The Ravenswood-Uptown area has always been a port of entry for the ever-changing populations. The congregation now reflects the diversity of the area including Spanish, Filipino and English speaking families sharing a rich blend of customs and liturgies.
In 1983, under Father Joseph Corrigan, the interior of the church was completely renovated. The main altar area was re-designed, bringing the altar much closer to the people and beautifully combining new and old traditions.
In 1992, Our Lady of Lourdes became one of the few churches in the Archdiocese to have 24-hour Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This Adoration is held in the Grotto, which is a replica of the original Shrine in Lourdes, France.
